Lethbridge remains one of Canada’s most affordable cities for rent: report

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A new national ranking places Lethbridge on the more affordable end of housing rentals in the country.

Rentals.ca and Urbanation have released the National Report Report for July 2023.

According to the report, the national average monthly cost of rent in Canada was $2,078 in July, increasing by 1.8 per cent from June and by 8.9 per cent over the last year.

Lethbridge was significantly cheaper, though, as one bedroom units in the city rented for an average of $1,168 per month, up 6.1 per cent year-over-year. Homes with two bedrooms increased by 9.5 per cent in one year to $1,375 per month.

That means that renters in Lethbridge can expect to pay $692 and $921 per month respectively less for housing than Canadians elsewhere.

The city was also less expensive than the Alberta average, as one bedroom rentals went for $1,419 per month and two bedrooms for $1,760.

A total of 35 Canadian communities were analyzed for the National Rent Report, including four in Alberta. The cities in Alberta are listed below in descending order of price with the number in brackets representing their place on the national ranking.

  • Calgary (26)
    • One bedroom: $1,718 per month, up 17.2 per cent year-over-year
    • Two bedrooms: $2,121 per month, up 16.9 per cent year-over-year
  • Edmonton (31)
    • One bedroom: $1,197 per month, up 12.8 per cent year-over-year
    • Two bedrooms: $1,531 per month, up 11.5 per cent year-over-year
  • Lethbridge (32)
    • One bedroom: $1,168 per month, up 6.1 per cent year-over-year
    • Two bedrooms: $1,375 per month, up 9.5 per cent year-over-year
  • Grande Prairie (35)
    • One bedroom: $1,037 per month, up 14.5 per cent year-over-year
    • Two bedrooms: $1,201 per month, up 8.5 per cent year-over-year

Vancouver remains the most expensive city in the country in which to rent a home. In July, one bedroom units rented for an average of $3,013 per month while homes with two bedrooms went for $3,918 per month.
