RCMP officer in Alberta charged with theft

BLACKFALDS, AB – An RCMP officer in Alberta has been charged with theft.

In May of 2022, the RCMP said it was made aware of allegations that an officer was in possession of seized exhibits taken from the Blackfalds detachment.

As part of an ongoing investigation, on July 10, 2023, the RCMP executed a search warrant at the officer’s residence in Red Deer. Police said items believed to have been stolen from the exhibit room at the Blackfalds detachment were seized.

Cpl. Brandon Smith, 44, has been charged with:

  • Two counts of theft under $5,000
  • Two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000

Smith is scheduled to appear in court on August 16, 2023 in Red Deer.

The RCMP noted that at the time of this investigation, Smith was an active duty officer at the Red Deer RCMP detachment. He has been suspended with pay pending court and additional internal investigative processes. Police said additional updates “are not anticipated”.
