Open Farm Days returning for 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Open Farm Days is coming back to Alberta from August 19 to August 20, 2023.

The event is a celebration of Alberta agriculture that gives people insight into how food gets to their table through interactive experiences on farms and ranches across the province.

For the Open Farm Days event, farmers open up their properties to the public to give them a chance to experience what work is done on the farm.

In the past, Open Farm Days has included livestock and ranches, as well as organic operations, corn mazes, wineries, distilleries, stables, petting zoos, u-pick honey, fruit, vegetable and grain farms.

Tim Carson, CEO of Alberta Open Farm Days, said, “Open Farm Days is a backstage pass to learn about where our food comes from. It’s an opportunity to meet the producers, travel across this great province, and understand what the agriculture industry means to Alberta.”

Carson added that 130 farms have registered to be hosts for Open Farm Days, from areas like Medicine Hat to Grande Prairie. The different farms each provide a different experience for visitors.

Carson explained, “Every farm has its own programming that they have created specifically around their location.”

“There are farm tours, long table dinners, demonstrations, so it’s tremendously dynamic and diverse.”

This year marks the 11th anniversary of the event, and 2023 is being recognized as the “Year of the Bison”. According to the Open Farm Days website, western Canada is home to 92 per cent of farms reporting bison in Canada, and 97 per cent of the national herd.

A list of farms participating in Open Farm Days can be found at the event website.
