Alberta announces funding for technology startups

EDMONTON, AB – The provincial government will invest $13.6 million to support emerging technology companies.

The initiative comes as part of the Alberta Innovates Ecosystem Development Partnerships Program, which aims to expedite growth in the province’s research and innovation ecosystem.

A total of 19 partners will be given access to resources that the government said will help to advance their concepts and prototypes, which will prepare them for entering the marketplace

Nate Glubish, Minister of Technology and Innovation said, “There’s no better time to be in tech in Alberta than now. We know the importance of ensuring appropriate supports are in place to help small and medium-sized technology companies grow and bring their ideas to market.”

He added, “The investments being made in these organizations will help solidify Alberta’s reputation as a growing and thriving technology hub.”

Among the 19 partners funded by the program are the University of Lethbridge Hub for Neuroengineering Solutions, which received $1 million, and the Spatial Technologies Applied Research and Training (START) Centre, which received $709,202.

Partners with the program will have up to 36 months to implement their projects.
