LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge resident has been on a remarkable journey of mobility.

Sunao Ayukawa, a 93-year-old man living in Lethbridge, was diagnosed with stage four liver cirrhosis in 2017, and currently has his liver functioning at 40 per cent capacity.

Since his diagnosis, he has been adamant about maintaining his personal health. Sunao made it a goal to walk at least 20,000 steps every single day in order to facilitate his healthy lifestyle.

Sunao said, “First I set my goal at 10,000 steps a day, because I didn’t know how much I could walk in a day, and I was able to do that by lunch time.”

From April 2022 until August 22, 2023, Sunao had taken over nine million steps, for a distance of nearly 4,000 kilometres, enough to cover the distance from Sydney, Australia to Perth, Australia.

He walks outside on days with favourable weather, and inside on a treadmill on other days.

He added, “I spend about four hours a day walking, so that keeps me busy.”

On top of his walking, Sunao had to adopt a whole new diet when he got his diagnosis, which he has been very adamant about sticking to. His doctor in Calgary told him a healthy diet and exercise would help extend his life.

“There’s lots of things [my doctor] said I should avoid eating. That’s mostly greasy food and oily food, and I eat a lot of vegetables and a lot of fruits.”

Sunao has embraced his walking and eating routine and it has become second nature to him.

He explained, “I just don’t even think about my illness anymore. I’ve been doing it every day so it’s kind of a routine every day. My results are good and I’d like to keep it that way.”
