New chief justice appointed to Alberta Court of Justice

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Alberta Court of Justice has appointed its new chief justice.

James A. Hunter has been appointed to the position effective September 1, 2023. Hunter takes over from outgoing Chief Justice Derek G. Redman, who will continue to sit as a justice in southern Alberta.

Justice Hunter will serve on a seven-year term. He graduated from the University of Alberta law school in 1988 and became a partner at the firm of Grant, Alton, Hunter in Stettler.

Justice Hunter was appointed to the Alberta Court of Justice in 2009, was named assistant chief justice in 2014, and began overseeing the Justice of the Peace Program in 2021.
