LETHBRIDGE, AB – The start of another academic year at Lethbridge College means the institution is all set for New Student Orientation (NSO). The annual event takes place on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.

For the fall 2023 semester, the college said over 5,000 students, including more than 2,500 new students, have registered to study at the local post-secondary.

The NSO day starts with a check-in at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium from 8 to 9 a.m., followed by a welcome from Lethbridge College President and CEO Dr. Brad Donaldson. Stephanie Savage, the college’s Alumni and Engagement manager will provide a keynote speech.

From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., students can take part in program orientations. There will be a barbecue lunch with the Lethbridge College Students’ Association from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in The Cave. Campus tours will be available throughout the day.

From 1 to 4 p.m., additional welcome events for Indigenous and international students will take place.

Nancy Russell, Dean, Student Affairs stated, “NSO is one of several components of our First Year Experience program that helps students get ready for college before they even start class.”

She said, “For the past two years, we have also offered summer orientation tours and sessions with key service areas to ensure students who need supports have everything in place for the start of the term.”

Over the summer, Student Affairs teamed up with the Lethbridge College Marketing department and Digital Communications and Media program to launch the College 101 campaign. Posters around campus include QR codes will links to online resources for students needing a helping hand.

Lindsay Workman, Associate Dean of Student Affairs said, “We want to normalize struggle, to show students they’re not alone in needing help.”

She added, “The opportunity to work with a current student in creating a campaign for new students was a wonderful experience. We hope having this information readily available will reduce some stress for newcomers to campus.”

Registration for the September 5 NSO day can be done online at the Lethbridge College website.

The college noted that apprenticeship students are already on campus, and a trades-specific orientation occurred on Monday, August 28. The first day of classes for most students is Wednesday, September 6.
