LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Special Air Quality Statement is in effect for multiple areas in Alberta, including Lethbridge. Environment Canada issued the statement on Thursday, August 31, 2023.

The agency said wildfire smoke is causing or is expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility. The statement noted that the smoke is anticipated to move out of the Lethbridge area by the weekend.

The agency stated that individuals with lung or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people and those who work outdoors are at a higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by smoke.

It is being advised that people stop outdoor activities if possible. Individuals are encouraged to contact their health care provider if they or someone in their care experiences shortness of breath, wheezing, severe cough, dizziness, or chest pains. The full statement from Environment Canada is available online.

A map of affected areas is also available at the federal government website.
