Alberta Serious Incident Response Team investigating in-custody death in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an in-custody death of a 31-year-old woman.

Just after 11:30 p.m, on September 1, 2023, a woman was arrested by the Lethbridge Police Service in connection to an aggravated assault. Police say at the time, she was highly impaired by unknown substances, and was later taken to Chinook Regional Hospital.

The woman remained in the hospital under the care of medical staff throughout most of Saturday, September 2, until she was released back into the custody of police.

When she was returned to police custody, she was placed in a holding cell where she was later found unresponsive. She was pronounced deceased following life-saving attempts by police and EMS.

ASIRT members arrived in Lethbridge on September 2, and an investigation is ongoing.
