City of Lethbridge removing goldfish and koi from local storm ponds

Sep 5, 2023 | 9:57 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Officials with the City of Lethbridge are working to remove goldfish and koi out of two local storm ponds. Goldfish and koi are both non-native species introduced into lakes and storm ponds that cause problems for the native species and their habitat.

The removal process has started already with the lowering of the water levels in Chinook Lake and Elma Groves storm ponds, ahead of the Rotenone treatment.

Rotenone is a naturally occurring complex that is not hazardous to human, pet or wildlife health, only gilled species. The treatment and removal of the invasive species will occur on Tuesday, September 5 and Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

Chinook Lake park will be closed to public access during the removal. Residents are encouraged to stay away from Elma Groves storm pond during the process.
