GRAND PRAIRIE, AB – Mounties were out and about on Alberta roadways over the Labour Day long weekend.

From September 1 to 4, 2023, Alberta RCMP issued 2,124 tickets for those violating traffic safety laws.

Inspector Chris Romanchych, Officer in Charge of Alberta RCMP Traffic Services said in a media release; “In a four-day period, we issued over 2,000 tickets; 2,000 tickets for what should, by this point, be common sense. Everyone knows the risks of speeding. Everyone knows the risk of driving under the influence.”

Of the tickets issued:

  • 1,124 for speeding
  • 41 for distracted driving
  • 46 for liquor and cannabis offences
  • 50 for not wearing a seatbelt

Due to a combination of many factors, including; excessive speeding, impaired driving, and improper use of safety equipment, there were five fatal motor vehicle collisions that resulted in six fatalities on the long weekend.

Romanchych added, “The decisions to break the rules of the road is an extremely selfish one that does not consider how your choices may affect others. Saving a couple of minutes by speeding isn’t worth risking the lives of others. I would hope that people consider the cost of a cab as less than the cost of a life.”

Alberta RCMP wants to remind all Albertans to never get behind the wheel if planning to use drugs and alcohol, stay off the roads if the conditions are not optimal for you to travel, and always give yourself extra time to arrive at your destination safely.
