LETHBRIDGE, AB – The local United Way kickstarted its 2023 campaign with a new fundraiser in downtown Lethbridge.

On September 11, 2023, United Way held the Pull the Bus fundraising event at Festival Square. At the event, teams of eight to 10 people were timed as they pulled a 24,000 pound city transit bus 75 feet down 6 Street South.

Pull the Bus began at 11 a.m. and ran until 3 p.m., and also included a barbecue by donation at the square.

Jen Visser, executive director for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Lethbridge and District, said an event like Pull the Bus is important for bringing in funding and support to many organizations associated with the United Way.

She explained, “We’re one of the longest relationships the United Way has. Having support from the United Way means that we can provide programs to children in Lethbridge and surrounding areas with a volunteer mentor, and if we couldn’t do that, we couldn’t provide that program.”

United Way has incorporated local art and history into the event.

Local artist Jason Trotter transformed pieces of buses provided by Lethbridge Transit into artwork. The pieces were then given out as prizes for the fastest team, top fundraising team, and the recipients of the team spirit award.

The United Way Community Fundraising Campaign runs from September until December, with a goal of raising $296,000. Information on the organization and how to donate is on the United Way website.
