LETHBRIDGE, AB – More than 100 people marched from Lethbridge City Hall to Galt Gardens, aiming to bring attention to a wide range of issues impacting those living with disabilities.

The 2023 Citizen Walk About was held on Friday, September 15, 2023, organized by the Southern Alberta Individualized Planning Association (SAIPA) and the South Region Self-Advocacy Network (SRSAN).

The theme for this year’s walk is “Together We Are Strong,” celebrating the resilience that empowers society to overcome barriers.

SAIPA Executive Director Mark Davids said there have been several pressing issues impacting peoples’ everyday lives, particularly among those who have disabilities. One example he gave is transit.

“Transit is something that’s been affecting peoples’ ability to access the community, go to their jobs, and live their day-to-day lives,” said Davids. “This is an awareness march that’s meant to bring those issues to the general public so that people are more aware so we can do something to help people ensure they have access to the community and live full lives.”

Davids said he was proud to partake in the walk alongside several community organizations that work with people with disabilities.

Dignitaries such as Lethbridge City Councillor Ryan Parker and Lethbridge-West MLA Shannon Phillips provided remarks prior to the start of the walk.

After arriving at Galt Gardens, participants held a barbeque, put on a talent show, and presented information about the issues impacting their communities and the available services.
