LETHBRIDGE, AB – Every September sees organizations, communities, and schools across Canada take part in the Terry Fox Run.

In Lethbridge on Friday, September 15, 2023, the Green Acres Foundation held its Terry Fox Walk at Henderson Lake Park. At the event, organizers were joined by Terry Fox’s uncle, also named Terry, who was the namesake for the Canadian icon.

Terry spoke about his nephew’s legacy, and said he is inspired by how much of an impact his run and story still has on Canadians.

He added, “It means everything. We just look up to him all the time because of what he did. He started something beautiful, different and new.”

Fox continued, “I hope he is remembered forever and ever, because what he’s done and what he started is phenomenal. It gets people together, gets people thinking right and realizing we’ve all got to help each other, especially when it comes to diseases.”

Residents from all nine Green Acres senior communities in Lethbridge were brought to Henderson Lake Park via bus for the walk around the lake. Assisted e-bike rides were offered for the residents, and there were games and musical entertainment.

Along with walking and raising awareness, Fox is aiming to continue his nephew’s legacy of kindness, and has a goal for all the kids he talks to at schools:

“When I’m talking to the kids at schools, I tell them about this dream, and I ask them ‘please try to do two good deeds a day. You’ll not only help somebody, but you’ll also feel good’.”

The Terry Fox Run takes place across Canada on Sunday, September 17, 2023, while the Terry Fox School Run takes place nationally on Friday, September 22.

According to the Terry Fox Foundation, the organization has raised over $850 million towards cancer research projects since it opened in 1988.
