CLARESHOLM, AB – A southern Alberta community has selected its two new municipal leaders.

The Town of Claresholm by-election was held on Monday, September 18, 2023. As of this publication, all of the results are considered to be unofficial and are expected to be officially declared on Friday, September 22.

Coming out on top with an estimated 569 votes, Brad Schlossberger has been named the mayor-elect. He ran against Lon Hall, who captured a projected 376 ballots.

As well, four people were in contention for a single town council seat.

Diana P. Ross leads the race with 300 votes, although she was only four votes ahead of second-place Shaun MacPherson. The Town of Claresholm said that there will be a recount due to how close the results are.

Also running for council were Chris Jason Dixon, who secured an estimated 177 votes, and Ryley Jodoin, who got approximately 159 votes.

The by-election came after former mayor Chelsae Petrovic stepped down in order to run for the United Conservative Party (UCP) in the 2023 Alberta provincial election, and has since been sworn-in as the MLA for Livingstone-Macleod.

Schlossberger then left his spot on town council to run for mayor, thus opening up a second position in the by-election.

According to the Town of Claresholm, voter turnout in the by-election was approximately 30 per cent.
