Volunteers needed for LPS Victim/Witness Services Unit

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) Victim/Witness Service Unit is looking to add some new members to its ranks.

The unit provides supports to individuals that have been impacted by crime, trauma or a tragedy. Volunteers help those affected navigate the criminal justice system and recover from their experience.

The LPS said it takes a team of about 60 members to ensure the unit can deliver 24-hour, 365-days-a-year crisis support. Officials noted that as the service is offered to anyone who has been the victim of a crime, “it is crucial that the team is comprised of individuals of diverse ages, genders and cultures.”

No specific experience is required, but the unit is looking for volunteers who are 18 years of age or older, who have a clear criminal record and a desire to help the Lethbridge community.

Catherine Pooley, the unit’s manager said, “We want our team to reflect the city we support.”

Pooley added, “Lethbridge is such a diverse community, and we can learn so much from working side-by-side. We have the potential to better understand and support the unique needs of various communities when they have a place at our table.”

Volunteer Crisis Support Workers receive training and ongoing learning opportunities to support the LPS by providing trauma-informed, client-centred care for victims both on scene and over the phone.

Applications to join the unit are open until October 25, 2023. Those interested in volunteering can apply through the LPS website.
