LETHBRIDGE, AB – A two-day event to showcase the work of emergency services is being held in Lethbridge.

Heart of a Future Hero is running in the city at Lethbridge Fire Station #4.

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) and ZOLL Medical teamed up for the event, aimed at educating future and current EMS professionals about cardiac care.

Martin Alvaro, Account Executive with ZOLL Medical said, “We started out east in the maritimes, going service to service. We carried that tour all the way from Halifax, all the way to Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and now we’re here in Alberta.”

Alvaro added that Heart of a Hero evolved once it hit Alberta, becoming the Heart of a Future Hero Tour through its educational aspect with students.

High school students in Lethbridge interested in pursuing a career in emergency services were invited to the event. Activities at the fire hall included guest speakers, skills stations, and a cardiac arrest response competition.

The skills stations included:

  • Traumatic brain injury management
  • CPR and mechanical CPR
  • Advanced airway management
  • Paramedic demos
  • Cardiac monitoring technology

Mike Humphrey from Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services said engaging with youths in the community about careers with emergency services is vital, as they are always looking for more help.

He elaborated, “We’re always looking for quality people, and finding the quality of people that you want is a challenge. Partnering with ZOLL has been very advantageous as we’re able to get young people in and showcase what opportunities there are.”

The Heart of a Future Hero event is on from September 20 to 21, 2023.
