LETHBRIDGE, AB – The first courts in Lethbridge dedicated to pickleball have officially been opened.

Dozens of athletes, spectators, and dignitaries came to see the new courts at Legacy Park on Wednesday, September 20, 2023.

City Councillor Ryan Parker kicked-off the ceremonies with a speech, saying that the cost involved was worth it.

“These courts that we’re on today are just over $650,000, and it was a grant from our federal government, which we greatly appreciate,” said Parker. “As you can see, there’s state-of-the-art Plexipave, and it’s amazing… I was told how good this is, how much better it is on the knees, how much better it is for the game, and how much easier it is on the shoes.”

City of Lethbridge General Manager of Culture Robin Harper said pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in North America and there was a strong level of support for new courts in the city.

He touted the quality of the courts and how he believes that it will let the sport continue to thrive.

“The new one has wind screening, which as everyone knows, is a requirement for any kind of court in Lethbridge to be able to play, especially with the type of ball they use,” said Harper. “I think it’ll continue to grow. The access for this new court, as well as the opportunity for the [Lethbridge Pickleball Club] to host tournaments and events, I think, will be a real benefit to the city.”

Klaus Witzke with the Lethbridge Pickleball Club said it was a long process to get these courts established, taking about five years from when it was first proposed.

Legacy Park features Community Play Boxes that allow the public to borrow sports equipment such as pickleball rackets and balls. Community Play Boxes are also available at Nicholas Sheran Park on the west side.

Councillor Parker said the city will have to find more locations to build pickleball courts, as he believes the sport will continue to grow in the future.
