New federal electoral boundaries now in effect

LETHBRIDGE, AB – If the next federal election were to take place after April 22, 2024, some residents would find themselves voting in a different riding.

Elections Canada said orders describing and naming Canada’s future electoral districts are now in force.

Chief Electoral Officer of Canada Stéphane Perrault said, “The independent review of electoral boundaries is a crucial part of our democratic system. I want to acknowledge the complex work undertaken by the commissions that led the effort to determine the new electoral district boundaries.” 

Over the past decade, Alberta will have gone from 28 federal ridings to 37.

The goal of electoral redistribution is to ensure that all of Canada’s federal ridings have a similar population of approximately 115,000. Redistributions are done every 10 years.
