LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Lethbridge (U of L) is presenting an Indigenous woman in Lethbridge with an honorary degree.

Itsisaanoowa (Vision Beyond), Elder Christina Fox has worked for the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division for over 20 years in the role of First Nations Liaison Support Worker.

In the schools, Fox shares her knowledge of the Blackfoot way of life by offering lessons on subjects like Blackfoot language and drumming.

In 2016, Fox was named the recipient of the school division’s Share the Mission award.

The school presents the award to those who have offered outstanding or long service, accepted demanding challenges, and more.

U of L Chancellor Terry Whitehead said, “Elder Christina Fox is such a positive force in everything she does. Her ability to educate and shed light on the darkness she encountered as a residential school student in a manner that uplifts the next generation is truly remarkable.”

Fox is also an author, having recently published a book titled My Suitcase: Nii Sookayis. The book begins by describing Fox’s first memory of a residential school, and focuses on triumphs and celebrations.

Fox will be presented with an honorary doctor of laws, honoris causa, at the 2023 Fall Convocation ceremony on Saturday, October 14.
