Fort Macleod is not getting a Walmart, despite online rumours

FORT MACLEOD, AB – Despite what some people had been saying online, residents of Fort Macleod should not be expecting to have a new large retail store.

The Town of Fort Macleod aimed to dispel these rumours in a Facebook post on Thursday, October 5, 2023.

According to the municipality, a social media post contained a picture that suggested that Walmart Canada was looking to open a new location in the community.

“We want to assure you that there is no truth to this rumor. As of now, there are no plans for a Walmart store to be established in Fort Macleod,” said the Town of Fort Macleod on Facebook.

“While we understand the excitement such news might bring, it’s important to rely on accurate information.”

As of the 2021 federal census, Fort Macleod had a population of 3,297. That would have likely made the town one of the smallest Canadian communities in which Walmart operated.
