LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes lost 1-0 in overtime to the Brandon Wheat Kings on October 11, 2023.

Both teams had plenty of power play time in the first period, but neither squad could score. Carson Bjarnason made 13 saves for the Wheat Kings in the frame, while Harrison Meneghin stopped 17 for Lethbridge.

There was even less offense in the second period. The Hurricanes managed just six shots while Brandon put eight on Meneghin. The Wheat Kings had a pair of power play opportunities in the second, but could not solve Meneghin.

Lethbridge’s offense picked up in the third period, outshooting Brandon 14-8. Both teams had man-advantages but neither could get one past the opposing goaltender, which meant overtime was needed.

Hurricanes defenseman Noah Chadwick had a solid opportunity early in overtime but was stopped by Bjarnson. The Canes had a power play in the extra frame, in which they generated a few high-danger chances, including Joe Arnsten hitting the crossbar.

Detroit Red Wings prospect Nate Danielson wired his first goal of the season, in his first game of the season, with 1:07 left in the extra frame to win the game 1-0. It was the Wheat Kings’ only shot in overtime.

Lethbridge outshot Brandon 36-34 in the contest. The Canes went scoreless on six power plays, while their penalty kill stopped all five Brandon opportunities.

The Canes are now 5-2-1-0, and remain in first place of the Eastern Conference. They still have not lost at home in regulation.

The Hurricanes’ next two games will be on the road. They are in Moose Jaw on Friday, October 13 and in Brandon on Saturday, October 14.
