Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services partners with Blood Tribe for training

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) has teamed up with Blood Tribe Emergency Services (BTES) for training.

The two departments are collaborating, with LFES members training the crews from BTES on techniques and equipment that they do not usually have access to.

Travis Coleman, Fire Chief for BTES, said lots of the Blood Tribe crew members are younger, and the training with LFES will provide beneficial mentorship.

He added, “Now what I want is to make this an annual thing for all of our department to come in to do these training days so that it’s not a structured course. We can come in and learn the techniques from the experienced firefighters here in Lethbridge.”

This year marks the first year that the two departments have collaborated for training. Both Coleman and LFES Deputy Chief of Training Wes Borland have expressed their interest in continuing the partnership into the future.

Borland also said he is hoping to bring in more nearby departments for training, in order to further the relationships between the crews in southern Alberta.

He stated, “Hopefully we can bring in some other agencies from Coaldale, Coalhurst, Picture Butte, places like that.”

Fire Prevention Officer Troy Hicks was also at the training event. Hicks gave advice regarding fire safety as part of Fire Prevention Week.

Hicks recommends that those using space heaters keep other objects one metre away, and do not leave their house when cooking, even items in the oven.
