Two Hurricanes draft picks named to Saskatchewan roster for 2023 WHL Cup

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Two Lethbridge Hurricanes draft picks have been selected for a prestigious junior tournament.

The 2023 Western Hockey League (WHL) Cup will be taking place at the Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer from October 18 to 22. The tournament features the top 2008-born players in western Canada paired off into four teams representing Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Forwards Dayne Beuker and Chase Petersen, who were both taken by the Hurricanes in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft in May, will represent Saskatchewan in the tournament.

Beuker was the Hurricanes’ first round selection in the draft with the 14th overall pick. Beuker, a native of Humboldt, Saskatchewan, spent most of last season with the Humboldt Broncos U15 AA team.

In 30 games, Beuker scored 47 goals and added 56 assists for 103 points. This season, Beuker has four goals and three assists in four games with the Saskatoon Blazers U18 AAA team.

Petersen was taken with the Hurricanes’ first of two picks in the second round in the draft, 23rd overall. He led the Swift Current Broncos U15 AA team with 69 points (27 goals, 42 assists) in 29 games last season, while chipping in 13 points in four postseason matchups.

Petersen has three goals in six games for the Moose Jaw Warriors U18 AAA team so far this season.

The tournament begins on October 18 with a game between Manitoba and Alberta at 4:15 p.m. Saskatchewan takes on British Columbia that same night at 7.

The medal games will be on Sunday, October 22, with the bronze medal game at 10:15 a.m. and the gold at 1 p.m.

Current Lethbridge Hurricanes forward Miguel Marques was named to the tournament’s all-star team in 2021, and former Hurricanes goaltender Bryan Thomson was an all-star in 2017.
