LETHBRIDGE, AB – A University of Lethbridge (U of L) student has been named a recipient of a $5,000 bursary from the Telus Student Bursary program.

Cody Young is in his final year as a psychology student at the U of L. He aspires to become a child psychologist or a family liaison counsellor when he graduates.

On working with children specifically, Young told Pattison Media, “The more I learned about children and youth I thought it was more interesting. Just over time, the access and the lack of access more so for youth to talk to counselors is rough.”

He added, “Especially for that age range, which is very much [about] finding yourself and having tons of questions. So being able to have somebody to talk to about that like a counselor would be really big and I’d like to be someone in that position.”

Every Tuesday, Young spends his time volunteering at Youth One, a youth and family centre which tries to provide youths with a place of belonging, support, and guidance.

He said, “The funds will definitely help out with my schooling so I can dedicate more time to that so I don’t have to have the financial restrictions of having to worry about work and school. I can mainly focus on school now and then I can spend the excess time with the volunteering and spending it with the kids around Lethbridge.”

Young attributed his desire to help youths to his childhood. He said, “I played a lot of sports so I had a lot of connections with coaches and mentors and lots of friends that played with me. Having that connection was really good. The mentorship roles really did help lead me down this path.”

To apply for the bursary, Young submitted an essay and a three-minute video, detailing how the funds would help him give back to the community.

Young would like to stress how grateful he is for the opportunity to receive the bursary. He hopes that his story can show Lethbridge residents that it is possible to win bursaries and scholarships, and to encourage local youth to apply.

He said, “If I can get it, anybody can get it.”
