City of Lethbridge provides update to downtown construction
LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge has issued a letter to business owners and residents in the downtown area impacted by recent construction.
The 7 Street South construction project is ongoing, with steps such as pavement markings and road line painting set to begin soon. Below is a listing of some of the work underway and work scheduled.
- Pavement marking and road line painting: The first stage of road line painting and pavement markings is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 16, 2023. The work will occur on the newly paved sections of 4 Avenue South and 7 Street South between 3 and 4 avenues. Traffic will be reduced to two lanes in the immediate work areas and no street parking will be allowed. Work impacting parking lot access will be completed during off peak hours to minimize disruptions.
- 4 Avenue and 7 Street South intersection surface improvements: Construction on the new concrete curbs, sidewalk and road base is underway in the intersection and adjacent roadway. The City said the hope is to have the intersection opened up the week of November 6, 2023, with traffic signal installation to follow. Officials noted that the City of Lethbridge will not be enforcing parking fines on 7 Street between 3 Avenue South and 4 Avenue South until after the intersection has been re-opened.
- Ongoing pipe installation (7 Street South: 5 Avenue to 6 Avenue): Pipe installation on 7 Street between 5 Avenue South and 6 Avenue South is progressing well, according to the City of Lethbridge, and it is expected to be finished by October 31. Road construction work will follow.
- Ongoing concrete work: Ongoing concrete repairs along 4 Avenue South are almost completed, with the exception of the above-noted ongoing work in the intersection of 7 Street South. Officials said that weather has delayed the completion of the accessibility ramps at the 6 Street intersection. The hope is to have that work completed sometime the week of October 16. Crews will be removing and replacing the concrete lane access on the north side of 4 Avenue between 6 Street South and 7 Street South. The work is expected to take roughly one week.
Officials added that as crews enter the fall season, construction “becomes increasingly difficult”, with days getting shorter and weather delays become more prominent. Residents with questions or concerns are directed to call Lethbridge 311.
