Hurricanes down Hitmen 3-2 in overtime to snap three-game skid

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes are back in the win column after taking down the Calgary Hitmen 3-2 on Thursday, October 18, 2023.

The Hurricanes came into the matchup having lost three straight games. They faced off against a Hitmen team occupying last place in the Eastern Conference.

The Hurricanes kicked off the scoring just under six minutes into the first period with Noah Chadwick’s third goal of the season, assisted by Joe Arntsen and Brayden Edwards. Hitmen forward Ethan Moore tied in the last three minutes of the first to make it 1-1.

In the second period, the game turned into a showcase fo the two goaltenders, with no goals until the Hurricanes took a 2-1 lead at the 15:44 mark. The goal was Miguel Marques’ fourth of the year, giving him 10 points in 11 games. Logan McCutcheon and Landen Ward tallied the assists.

The Hurricanes fell into some penalty trouble in th third period with three minor infractions. The Hitmen scored on the powerplay following a tripping penalty to Blake Swetlikoff to tie the game at two goals apiece. Despite the one goal, Harrison Meneghin came up big as the Hitmen outshot the Hurricanes 14-5 in the third.

Regulation time solved nothing, so the game went into overtime in front of over 2,600 spectators. Overtime was a short one, as Logan Wormald buried the game winner just 25 seconds into the extra frame to snap his team’s losing streak. The goal was Wormald’s third of the season, from Edwards and Chadwick.

Meneghin was named the first star of the game after his 37-save performance. Hitmen goaltender Ethan Buenaventura was the second star, and Marques was named third star.

With the win, the Hurricanes improve to a 6-4-1 record, tied for first place in the Central Division with the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The Canes will next take to the ice on Friday, October 20 when they host the Red Deer Rebels at the ENMAX Centre. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
