Cold weather record broken in Bow Island

BOW ISLAND, AB – This week’s cold winter snap has already broken one daily minimum temperature record in southern Alberta.

Environment Canada said “unseasonably cold temperatures” have settled in across the province.

On Wednesday, October 25, 2023, they say Bow Island got down to a low of -17 degrees Celsius. This was the coldest October 25th on the books, breaking the previous record of -15.6 that was set in 2020.

Weather records in Bow Island have been kept since 1961.

Nine other communities in Alberta set cold weather records, including:

  • Esther Area
    • New record of -17.2
    • Old record of -15.7 set in 2001
    • Records in this area have been kept since 1985
  • Hendrickson Creek Area
    • New record of -26.6
    • Old record of -26.5 set in 2020
    • Records in this area have been kept since 1995
  • High Level Area
    • New record of -20.1
    • Old record of -20.0 set in 2004
    • Records in this area have been kept since 1962
  • Peace River Area
    • New record of -19.6
    • Old record of -14.9 set in 2004

Although the temperature in Lethbridge reached a minimum of -22.3 on October 25, it was not cold enough to set a new record for the community.

Heading into this weekend, Environment Canada said the weather should start to warm up once again.

The forecast high for Saturday, October 28, 2023, is zero. The temperature should reach plus 1 on Sunday.

On Halloween, taking place this coming Tuesday, the temperature is expected to hit 12 degrees.
