Alberta Health Services offering chronic pain and disease management workshops

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is providing two free virtual workshops for southern Alberta residents who are living with chronic pain, chronic disease symptoms and who are supporting someone with long-term health conditions.

The Better Choices, Better Health workshops are designed to help people take control of their health.

The program consists of six-weeks of workshops designed to support Albertans who are living with chronic pain or chronic health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, depression or weight management issues. The workshops are available for residents in the AHS South Zone.

The chronic disease self-management workshops begin Tuesday, November 7, 2023. They will run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for six consecutive weeks on Tuesdays.

The chronic pain self-management workshops begin Tuesday, November 14. They will run from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for six consecutive weeks on Tuesdays.

The workshop sessions are led by trained volunteers, with many of the volunteers living with a chronic health condition as well. Officials said this is done to ensure that the the leader of the program is able to relate to the participants and provide a supportive environment.

Better Choices, Better Help focuses on tips and techniques which tend to be common to all chronic conditions.

Participants will learn:

  • Techniques to manage their symptoms
  • Tips for healthy eating and becoming more active
  • Strategies for talking with the healthcare team
  • Methods for dealing with difficult emotions
  • Options for making everyday tasks easier
  • Ways to take care of themselves to enjoy a better quality of life

The workshops will be available via Zoom.
