Lethbridge College Kodiaks wrap up busy weekend

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks were in action this past weekend, in a wide array of sports.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Kodiaks men’s soccer team faced the second seeded Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks in Edmonton on Thursday, October 26, 2023.

The Ooks scored the first goal of the match in the 37th minute, and scored again just one minute later. The Ooks went on to win the match 6-0, outshooting the Kodiaks 11-7.

Brandon Francis of the Kodiaks and Chosen Jones of the Ooks were named players of the game.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The Kodiaks faced the north division Keyano Huskies in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) semi finals on October 27.

After one half of play, the game remained 0-0 thanks to Kodiaks first-year goalkeeper Samantha Burgis, who made five saves in the half.

The Huskies struck first in the 66th minute. Despite a strong offensive effort from the Kodiaks late in the match, the Huskies held on to win 1-0. The Kodiaks advanced to the bronze medal game.

Lethbridge College’s Nikki Stahl and Keyano College’s Ayla Taller were named players of the game.

The following day, the Kodiaks faced the top-seeded Concordia Thunder in the bronze medal match.

In the 34th minute, the Thunder scored first. Just two minutes later, Nikki Stahl tied the game.

In the 68th minute, Stahl was awarded a penalty kick but was unsuccessful in her attempt. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, the Thunder buried a rebound off the crossbar to secure a 2-1 victory and the bronze medal.

Raeleen Vanden Dungen of the Kodiaks and Monica Dickson of the Thunder were named players of the game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Kodiaks began a home-and-home series October 27 at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium against the St. Mary’s Lightning.

Hannah Helton led the Kodiaks in the first quarter, scoring six points. The Kodiaks led 20-17 after the first frame. Courtney Deemter scored seven of their 17 points in the second quarter.

The Kodiaks led 39-35 after the first half.

Tylee Perry sparked the Kodiaks in the third, picking up 15 points and four assists. Lethbridge pulled away in the quarter, extending the lead by 25.

Gaby Power was strong in the fourth quarter, draining all three of her three-point attempts. The Kodiaks won with a final score of 98-65.

Deemter and St. Mary’s Ivet Hidalgo were named players of the game.

The home-and-home series concluded the following night in Calgary.

Emily Hall led the Kodiaks in the first quarter with eight points coming off the bench. Kodiaks led 18-14 after the first quarter. The lead increased in the second quarter. The Kodiaks outscored the Lightning 25-12, shooting 50 per cent from three-point range.

Deemter led the Kodiaks in the third with six points and two rebounds.

Kitawna Sparks had an impressive fourth quarter. She scored nine points and collected six rebounds en route to the Kodiaks’ 83-65 win.

Sparks was named player of the game, alongside St. Mary’s Jaiden Hansen.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Kodiaks hosted the STMU Lightning in the first game of their home-and-home series. Filip Karanovic scored eight points and four rebounds in the first quarter. The Kodiaks trailed 27-24 at the end of the frame.

The Lightning kept control in the second quarter, leading 49-41 going into the half.

The Kodiaks shrunk the lead to five in the third quarter thanks to six points from Trey Barton and Declan Peterson, who picked up five defensive rebounds.

The Lightning maintained their lead throughout the fourth and won the game 91-76. Karanovic and St. Mary’s Johnpaul Okodua were named the players of the game.

The teams were back at it the following night, October 28, in Calgary. Peterson started the game strong with seven points and three rebounds, including a dunk. Kodiaks trailed 22-19 after the first.

Peterson’s strong performance continued in the second, racking up four more points and five rebounds. The Kodiaks led the quarter 24-23, although they trailed by one entering halftime.

Mason Hoffman scored nine points in the third quarter. At the end of the frame, the Kodiaks were down 70-66. The Kodiaks put up a solid fourth quarter effort led by eight points from Cody Tollestrup and Hoffman, who scored seven.

Despite nine trips to the free-throw line, the Kodiaks did not recover, losing the game 97-87. Hoffman and St. Mary’s Brock Dewsbery were named players of the game.

CROSS COUNTRY

The ACAC Championships were hosted by Lethbridge College for 2023. The best runners in the conference met at Nicholas Sheran Park to race in this season’s championship.

The Kodiaks men’s team finished third overall, ensuring their place in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Nationals, which will take place November 10 and 11 in Nova Scotia.

The Men’s team placements were as follows:

  • Owen Stewart, 7th place, 27.38.
  • Ethan Grasmeyer, 10th place, 28.43.
  • Justin Fisher, 12th place, 28.56.
  • Conner Van Den Hoek, 15th place, 29.41.

The women’s team finished fifth overall.

Katrina Michel led the team, finishing in eighth place at 25.56 minutes, followed by Kate Block, who finished 11th with a time of 26.33 minutes.
