Lethbridge man receives life sentence for second-degree murder

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A judge in Lethbridge has handed down a significant sentence following a woman’s death in late 2022.

In Lethbridge Court of King’s Bench on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, David Dragland, 60, of Lethbridge, was sentenced to life in prison on one count of second-degree murder.

That means he is set to spend the next 25 years behind bars and will not be eligible for parole for 13.5 years.

Dragland was arrested at his home on the 2500 block of 13 Avenue North just after 11:00 p.m. on December 27, 2022.

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) reported that Dragland had stabbed his wife and killed her.

He was initially was charged with one count of first-degree murder, but later plead guilty to second-degree murder.

Dragland will also be required to submit a DNA sample and faces a lifetime weapons prohibition.
