LETHBRIDGE, AB – One of Lethbridge’s major post-secondary schools is welcoming an esteemed elder into its team.

Lethbridge College has hired Dr. Lloyd Cavers to join its Cultural Support Program.

President and CEO Dr. Brad Donaldson said he is thrilled to have Cavers on their campus to support and guide students.

“Coming from a teaching background, Dr. Cavers will be able to connect with employees and students. We are looking forward to his long tenure, and the opportunity to learn from him,” said Donaldson.

Cavers has bachelor’s and masters’ degrees from the University of Manitoba and a PhD from the University of British Columbia, as was also formerly a superintendent with the Livingstone Range School Division in southern Alberta.

Since retiring in 2000, he has dedicated his life to being an Elder with the Métis in the region.

Cavers said he loves teaching.

“In my 25 years as an educator, I was involved in schools all over southern Alberta – as far east as Grassy Lake, west to the Crowsnest Pass, north to Nanton, south to the Montana border and several schools in between. But one thing I really missed when I became an administrator was teaching,” said Cavers.

As a member of the Cultural Support Team, Cavers will share Métis culture and history through workshops, events, classroom visits, and more. He also hopes to provide an extra ear to listen and to be a source of encouragement for students.

“We all know how low the graduation rate is among Indigenous peoples, generally,” said Cavers. “I can see the college playing an important role in changing that because there’s absolutely everything here that they need. They can start, and then go on and on and on.”

The first event for Cavers in his new role will be Métis Sash Day on November 16, 2023. Activities throughout the day will honour the culture, history and contributions of the Métis community.
