Nov 21, 2023 | 4:30 AM

COALDALE, AB – Residents of the Coaldale area can take advantage of a new campaign to reduce thefts of motor vehicles.

The Coaldale RCMP will hand out steering wheel locks and other crime prevention materials.

The event will run from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at the Coaldale Sportsplex on 1213 20 Avenue. The steering wheel locks will be distributed on a first come, first-served basis.

Staff Sgt. Mike Numan said the goal of this initiative is to educate the public on how they can prevent themselves from becoming the victims of auto theft.

“Steering wheel locks can provide an added layer of protection and serve as deterrent for vehicle theft,” said Numan. “We encourage residents to take advantage of this upcoming opportunity to enhance the security of their vehicles and to play an active role in preventing theft within their community.”

Numan adds that the five most-targeted vehicles for theft in the Coaldale area are:

  • Early 2000’s GMC Sierra
  • Early 2000’s Chevrolet Silverado
  • Early 2000’s Dodge Ram
  • Early 2000’s Ford F150
  • Ford F350’s

Other types drivers can use to deter vehicle theft include:

  • Always make sure to lock your vehicle
  • Never leave keys or garage door openers in your vehicle
  • Never leave important documents with personal identifying information in your vehicle
  • Ensure all valuables are removed or out of sight. This includes shopping bags, loose change, sunglasses, and any electronics
  • Do not leave your windows open when you leave your vehicle
  • If possible, store your vehicle in a locked garage when not in use
  • Park your vehicle in well lit areas and within sight. If you’re unable to park in a locked garage, keep outdoor lights on for added security.
