LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is giving residents of Lethbridge and the nearby area to play para ice hockey, also known as sledge hockey.

AHS is holding multiple dates through the rest of 2023 and into 2024 where people can come out and play the sport for free.

In the sport, players sit in a specifically designed sled with two regular-sized hockey skate blades that allow the puck to pass underneath. Players use two sticks that have metal picks on the end to propel them on the ice.

The program comes through a partnership between AHS, Lethbridge Minor Hockey Association and the Lethbridge Sports Council. Participants can play a full season or sign up to try an individual session.

There are nine sessions:

  • November 27
  • December 18
  • January 15, 2024
  • January 29
  • February 26
  • March 4
  • March 11
  • March 18
  • March 25

The sessions run from 7:45 p.m. until 8:45 p.m. at the Nicholas Sheran Ice Arena. All equipment will be provided, and participants are asked to call ahead to book their spot.

Remaining spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
