STANDOFF, AB – On Friday, November 24, 2023, the Kainai Women’s Wellness Lodge will team up with the Blood Tribe Police Service (BTPS) for a special event.

The annual ‘Walk in Her Shoes’ domestic violence awareness walk will see men in the community walk around in women’s shoes, all in the name of an important cause.

In a news release, Doris Low Horn, manager of the Kainai Women’s Wellness Lodge said, “November is Family Violence [Prevention] Month.”

Low Horn noted that for the last decade, they have hosted a walk to raise awareness on domestic violence and in the past four years, the initiative has been referred to as the ‘Walk in Her Shoes’ event.

Members of the BTPS will, according to Low Horn, “walk in high heel shoes to put a true meaning of what it feels like to walk in a women’s shoes, and it’s pretty tough.”

Additional partners for the event include Kainaiwa Children’s Services (the umbrella organization of the Kainai Women’s Wellness Lodge), the Kainai Wellness Centre, and Blood Tribe Recreation & Parks.

Low Horn added, “We hope to bring awareness to the Blood Tribe community members and all surrounding communities that family violence is alive and well in our community, and there is help if you or [someone you know needs] our support and services. We are here.”

The walk will start at 10 a.m. at the Multi-Purpose Building in Standoff. All event participants will receive a lunch and t-shirt.
