LETHBRIDGE, AB – The construction at the intersection of 4 Avenue and 7 Street South is over, and the intersection has been reopened.

The project completed three main elements, including the replacement of 100-year-old watermains along 7 Street South from 3 Avenue South to 6 Avenue South, and repaving along 4 Avenue South and 7 Street South. The work also saw the addition of protected bicycle lanes along 4 Avenue South from west of Scenic Drive South to Stafford Drive South, and along 7 Street South between 3 Avenue South and 7 Street South

Crystal Scheit, Urban Revitalization Manager for the City of Lethbridge said, “We only see benefits to having these new cycling lanes installed moving forward and it’s great to see the vibrancy brought in by the cycling lanes and the asphalt.”

She continued, “Knowing that we have the infrastructure underneath the surface to match everything that we can see on top is a huge benefit so that hopefully we won’t see any emergency water main repairs moving forward.”

Residents are advised to follow new signage, parking markings for lanes and parking spaces, and new cycling lanes. Parking enforcement will also resume now that construction is over.

Scheit said, “Thank you again to the businesses on 7 Street and 4 Avenue, as well their customers and all those impacted downtown, for their patience throughout the disruptions caused by this important infrastructure and construction project.

She continued, “The hardship of construction on a business is undeniable, but so are unexpected watermain breaks throughout the winter months. We’re so happy to have reached this significant milestone ahead of the holiday shopping season.”

The project has concluded for 2023. Crews will return in 2024 for more asphalt and concrete work, as well as to connect existing bicycle lanes to the new ones.
