LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is introducing two Ability Skate times into its public skating schedule.

Ability skate is a sensory-friendly public skating program specifically designed for Lethbridge residents with disabilities.

The event is a slower-paced skate, while creating a sensory-friendly environment. There will be no loud music to accommodate those with audio sensitivities, and the lights will be dimmed for those with light sensitivities.

Jennie Sudo, Partnership Strategist with the City’s Recreation & Culture team said, “We’re happy to launch off, its probably well overdue and we’re really excited about it.”

In addition to the audio and visual changes, the skate will allow the use of mobility assists such as a wheelchair or walker on the ice. Cleaning stations will be on site to wipe them off before they go on the ice.

The idea to introduce dedicated Ability Skate times was born out of a conversation from an attendee at a Community Conversation, and a Recreation and Culture staff member.

The Ability Skate will be free of charge and will be held twice a week at the Civic Ice arena. It will run on Sundays from 1:45 p.m. until 3:15 p.m., and on Tuesdays from 1 to 2 p.m.
