LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) and Alberta Sheriffs arrested three impaired drivers over the weekend.

During the first weekend of the annual Christmas Check Stop campaign, the two agencies checked approximately 400 vehicles, removed three impaired drivers from the road, issued one Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) Warn and 11 violation tickets.

Under the IRS program, an IRS Fail will be issued to drivers found to be impaired, resulting in a 15-month suspension (with the option of getting an ignition interlock device after the first three months), 30-day vehicle seizure, $1,000 fine and mandatory completion of the Planning Ahead course.

Drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of .05 or over are subject to an IRS Warn resulting in an immediate three-day license suspension and vehicle seizure along with a $300 fine.

LPS is continuing the Christmas Check Stop program throughout December. Police are urging residents that if they are going to drink, they should plan ahead and make arrangements for a safe ride home.
