UPDATE: MONDAY DECEMBER 4, 2023.

The Lethbridge Police Service has reported that it raised nearly $1,500 in support of the Special Olympics.

The department and the other participating agencies would like to thank the community for their generosity.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) is set to serve up a slice for a good cause.

The LPS and a contingent of other law enforcement agencies in southern Alberta will take part in the ‘Cops, Pops and Pizza’ event on Friday, December 1, 2023. It is an annual Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) fundraiser, in support of Special Olympics.

Members of the LPS, including K9 and Tactical Team members, Alberta Sheriffs, RCMP, Coaldale and District Municipal Enforcement and peace officers from surrounding communities will be at the Boston Pizza on Mayor Magrath Drive South from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday.

Police vehicles will be on display and in addition to serving customers, participants will be selling stuffed animals and collecting donations for Special Olympics.

Constable Braylon Hyggen with the LPS said the event coincides with the annual toque and teddy bear toss at the ENMAX Centre Friday night, when the Lethbridge Hurricanes will host the Saskatoon Blades.

Hyggen said, “We have a lot of Special Olympics athletes here in Lethbridge as well as all over the province that we like to support.”

He added, “It is a worldwide movement. It was exciting, this year, it was announced that Law Enforcement Torch Run internationally since its inception, has reached over $1 billion in funds raised for Special Olympics across the world.”

Hyggen noted that for last year’s event, about $4,200 was raised in Lethbridge and the LPS is hoping to exceed that for this year. He noted that the stuffed animals being sold at Boston Pizza Friday night will also be available at the Polar Plunge event in the new year.

Special Olympics athletes will be on-hand for the ‘Cops, Pops and Pizza’ fundraiser.
