Alberta’s Lieutenant Governor Salma Lakhani to host 2024 New Year’s Levee

Dec 12, 2023 | 4:25 PM

Lieutenant Governor Salma Lakhani will host the Annual New Year’s Day Levee at Government House in Edmonton on Monday, January 1, 2024.

The levee is a tradition in Canada dating back to the 1600s. It’s based on an older tradition in Europe that saw loyal subjects visit the monarch to pay their respects and pledge allegiance. Today, officials say the Levee at Government House is a chance for Albertans of all ages to meet the King’s representative in a more relaxed social setting.

Levee guests can enjoy light refreshments, a tour of Government House, send a postcard to Canadian troops serving overseas, and join in celebrating the start of a new year.

The levee is an open-house style event that is free and open to the public for all ages.

“I am so pleased to continue in this longstanding tradition of the New Year’s Day Levee. Everyone is welcome to attend– my husband, Zaheer, and I are looking forward to beginning the year by meeting Albertans and sharing our best wishes for a wonderful 2024,” she said.

The levee takes place on Monday, January 1, 2024 from 1 – 3 p.m. at Edmonton’s Government House (12845 – 102 Ave.).

Guests will be able to view the beautiful art and displays throughout Government House, meet and take a photo with the Lieutenant Governor, and enjoy live music and festive treats. The Lieutenant Governor and Dr. Lakhani will be joined in the receiving line by members of the Vice-Regal Escort.

Free, limited on-site parking will be available. Government House is wheelchair accessible from the west side of the building. General questions about the event can be directed to ltgov@gov.ab.ca.
