LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes kicked off 2024 with a 6-3 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Wednesday, January 3.

The Hurricanes headed into the matchup fresh of back-to-back victories over the Red Deer Rebels and the Medicine Hat Tigers. The Hurricanes had also played the Broncos in their first game back from the break, but fell 7-6 in overtime.

The first period of the game provided nothing on the scoresheet, with Swift Current having the 13-10 advantage in shots. In the second period, the Broncos struck first six minutes in with a goal by Clarke Caswell.

The Hurricanes responded with their own tally at the 10:18 mark with Tyson Zimmer’s 11th goal of the year and second of two goals on the night. Carter Dereniwsky and Trae Wilke added assists on the goal. The Broncos retook the lead just over five minutes later to end the second period at a 2-1 score.

However, that lead would not last as the Hurricanes had an offensive explosion in the third, scoring five goals, with three of them on the power play.

Brayden Edwards kicked off the scoring in the third with his 16th goal of the season from Logan Wormald and Noah Chadwick on the powerplay. On another powerplay just under five minutes later, Wormald added his own goal, this time assisted by Chadwick and Edwards.

The Hurricanes continued their powerplay success later when Zimmer scored his second goal of the game, with Chadwick adding his third assist, and Miguel Marques finding the scoresheet. Elias Knoester then added his own goal three minutes later from Logan McCutcheon and Wilke to make it five three.

The Broncos cut the deficit to two with just over two minutes left, but Edwards buried hi second of the night on the empty net to seal the win. Chadwick added his fourth assist on the night on the empty netter.

The Hurricanes finished the game 3/5 on the power play, and took only one penalty, which they killed off. Harrison Meneghin stopped 25 shots and the Hurricanes outshot Swift Current 39-28.

Chadwick spoke on his team’s success in the last two weeks, and he said the energy in the locker room is very positive right now.

He explained, “Last night was just a great example of how we can play our best, and that third period was phenomenal.”

Chadwick added, “Over the break we just got a little reset over the break mentally and physically, to get our bodies back and get back to how we were playing at the start of the year.”

The Hurricanes will look to keep up their momentum on Friday, January 5 when they host the Tri-City Americans at the ENMAX Centre. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
