LETHBRIDGE COUNTY, AB – It’s a special year for Lethbridge County, as 2024 marks its 60th anniversary as a municipality.

The County was first incorporated on January 1, 1964 as the County of Lethbridge No. 26, amalgamating the MD of Lethbridge No. 25 and Lethbridge School District No. 7.

In 2000, the name was changed to County of Lethbridge and in 2014, to coincide with its 50th anniversary, the name was changed to the current Lethbridge County. A new logo representing the region’s agricultural roots was unveiled at that time.

Reeve Tory Campbell said, “We are thrilled to be celebrating 60 years of growth, progress, and community. Lethbridge County has emerged as an ideal place to live, work, and raise a family, and I am immensely proud to call the County home.”

Officials noted that since its inception, Lethbridge County has grown to become “the most productive agricultural community in Alberta” and generates around $4 billion in economic activity every year. The County is home to the highest concentration of livestock operations in the province. A significant value of in-demand crops such as wheat, barley, and canola are grown in the region.

The County said thanks to the evolution of its agricultural industry since 1964, there has been a steady growth in the agri-food sector, which allows more products to be finished in southern Alberta and exported across the country and around the world.

Campbell has a positive outlook on the future for Lethbridge County.

He said, “Going forward, we hope to further build upon the deep legacies of Lethbridge County’s producers, businesses, and residents and to foster regional collaboration to find innovative solutions to challenges for the benefit of us all.”

To celebrate its 60th anniversary, Lethbridge County has events and initiatives planned throughout the year that aim to bring the community together to celebrate and recognize its history, culture and future.
