LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes continue to make moves ahead of the January 10 Western Hockey League (WHL) trade deadline.

On Monday, January 8, 2024, the Lethbridge team announced it had acquired Sean Tschigerl from the Calgary Hitmen in exchange for draft picks.

Following this announcement, the team said it made another deal, sending 2003-born forward Blake Swetlikoff to the Kamloops Blazers for fellow 2003-born forward Dylan Sydor.

The Blazers will also get a third-round draft pick in the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft and a second-round pick in the 2025 draft.

The 20-year-old Sydor was originally undrafted in the WHL Draft but signed with Kamloops in 2021. The Kamloops product has appeared in 180 career regular season games in the WHL, totaling 85 points (42 goals, 43 assists), along with 45 penalty minutes and a plus-17 rating.

Additionally, he has appeared in 31 post-season games with the Blazers, scoring four goals and recording four assists, along with four penalty minutes.

Hurricanes general manager Peter Anholt said, “We’re really excited to be able to add Dylan to our forward group.”

Anholt added, “He is[a] good skating forward who has the ability to score goals and is having a great season this year. His playoff and Memorial Cup experience last year will be very valuable for our young forward group.”

Sydor has posted career-highs in all offensive categories this season, with 19 goals and 30 points in 34 games for Kamloops. The son of former NHL Stanley Cup winner Darryl Sydor, he was leading the Blazers in goals and points this year.

Meanwhile, Swetlikoff was originally picked up by Lethbridge prior to the 2023 WHL Trade Deadline from the Spokane Chiefs. He played in 67 games as a Hurricane over parts of two seasons, collecting 33 points (12 goals, 21 assists), along with 20 penalty minutes. He also appeared in four playoff games in 2023.

Anholt stated, “It’s always tough to trade good people like Blake. He was a big part of our leadership group both on, but more importantly, off the ice during his time with the Hurricanes.”

He added, “We wish him nothing but the best moving forward and thank him for his contributions to our organization.”

With this latest move, the Hurricanes have three overage players, including captain Joe Arntsen, and the newly-acquired Sean Tschigerl and Dylan Sydor.
