LETHBRIDGE, AB – A local creative is taking his talents to Banff.

Pattison Media’s Jordan Berg has been named an artist in residence at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. The Lethbridge composer will be in Banff honing his craft until January 27, 2024.

Berg explained that “the Banff Centre will support some time for me to go and work on a project and also take part in master classes, lectures, and working with musicians from around the world, colleagues from around the world, and basically be there to study and grow as an artist.”

He said he had applied in the summer of 2023 and found out he had been accepted to the artist in residence program last month.

Berg remarked, “It’s very prestigious.”

He added, “This is a great jumping-off point. I’ll have great experiences while I’m there, but also just as an item on a resume, it’s pretty good.”

Berg will be staying on-site through the duration of his stay, something that excites him.

He said, “My dad’s family, on his mom’s side, they’re from Banff from the early 1900s, some of the first [people] there. She was a figure skater and a teacher and her brother, my uncle Jim Deegan…he was a famous park warden and poet from Banff, so it’s kind of an interested ‘homecoming’ for me.”

In addition to learning from other artists during his residency, Berg said he plans to use his time to work on a symphony composition.

This is not the first time the local composer has been recognized for his musical efforts.

Last year, Berg participated in the highSCORE Festival in Pavia, Italy.
