LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is continuing measure to address water supply concerns.

Reservoir levels in the province have experienced a decline in recent years, including the Oldman Reservoir, which dropped from 58 per cent in August to 26 per cent in November of 2023.

General Manager of Water and Wastewater Doug Kaupp said that the dry fall and summer had a role to play. He explained, “While the recent snowfall has been positive in terms of much-needed moisture, we are hoping to see a lot more of it in the coming weeks and months, along with significant rainfall in the spring.”

In response to the issue, the City has created collaborative working groups with internal expertise and external stakeholders. The groups will look into additional avenues for water conservation for both the immediate and long-term future.

The City will collaborate with the regional partners they provide water to. These partners include Coaldale, Coalhurst, Picture Butte, Monarch, Diamond City, Shaughnessy, Iron Springs and Turin.

Director of Infrastructure Services Joel Sanchez said, “Our working groups are exploring all options and residents can trust we will keep them informed about our proactive initiatives to manage low water reserves effectively.”

The issue and initiative will be further discussed at the January 23, 2024 City Council meeting, and at the Assets & Infrastructure Standing Policy Committee meeting on February 1.
