LETHBRIDGE, AB – A celebrated and accomplished local athlete is being recognized by her alma mater.

The University of Lethbridge is set to induct Andrea Hlady as the latest member of its Pronghorns Hall of Fame.

She helped to lead the Pronghorns women’s basketball team to its only Canada West title in 1993.

Hlady was a two-time Canada West first-team all-star and All-Canadian, leading Canada West in scoring during the 1991-92 season, where she was named Canada West MVP.

The Pincher Creek native was named the Pronghorn Female Athlete of the Year in both 1992 and 1993.

She said it has been many years since she played at the U of L, but appreciates the recognition.

“I’m so grateful I even had the opportunity to be in that position to play and just to play. It feels like I was helped so much along the way and what a luxury for me to be in the Hall of Fame. It’s so great,” said Hlady.

Hlady now has a 16-year-old daughter who also plays basketball. She hopes that she helped to advance women’s sports for her daughter’s generation and for others to come.

Pronghorn Athletics Executive Director Neil Langevin said Hlady not only helped to elevate the sport of basketball but left an enduring mark on the University of Lethbridge.

“Inducting Andrea Hlady into our Hall of Fame is a testament to lasting impact she made during her time at the University of Lethbridge. Andrea exemplified excellence on the court, inspiring future generations,” said Langevin.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on February 9, 2024, when the Pronghorns host the University of Alberta pandas and Golden Bears at the U of L Gymnasium. The women’s game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. and the men’s at 8:00 p.m.
