Festival Square ice rink now open

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It’s time to lace up your skates and head to Festival Square.

The outdoor skating rink in downtown Lethbridge is officially open.

Construction was underway last week, and the Downtown Lethbridge BRZ said on January 16, 2024 that the rink is now available for public use.

The outdoor rink first opened on December 14, 2022.

Due to warmer conditions in December, the opening for the 2023-2024 winter season was delayed.

Rules for the rink, as listed by the Downtown Lethbridge BRZ, are:

  • Skates have to be worn on the ice
    • All types of skates are allowed, including hockey and figure skates
    • Skate assistance devices are allowed on the ice
  • Helmets and protective equipment are strongly recommended and encouraged
  • There is no food, pets, sleds, pucks, blankets, strollers, wagons or toys allowed on the ice
  • Skating that endangers or interferes with other skaters’ safety is prohibited
  • Skating while under the influence of drugs, alcohol or other control-impaired substances is prohibited
  • Children under the age of 12 should be supervised by an adult
  • Ice hockey is not allowed
  • Jumping or ice tricks are prohibited
  • Skating is not allowed during ice maintenance

Officials ask users to be courteous and share the ice, which includes maintaining a safe rate of speed.

Residents can visit the Downtown Lethbridge BRZ website for daily updates on whether or not the ice rink is open.
