Two from Lethbridge recognized for helping veterans

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) has honoured eight Albertans for the work they do to support the country’s veterans.

Minister of Veterans Affairs Ginette Petitpas Taylor presented the group with the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation at a ceremony in Calgary on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

“Every day, dedicated volunteers enrich the lives of Canada’s Veterans and their families. Presenting them with the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation is one of the ways we acknowledge the significant contributions of these individuals, who have gone above and beyond to be there for Veterans and their families. You make us all very proud,” said Taylor.

Among those recognized were Lethbridge locals Glenn Miller and Mike Duffy.

Miller, a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, has been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, General Stewart Branch in Lethbridge for the last 19 years, over a decade of which has been as a Branch Service Officer.

He is a founding member of the Lethbridge Military Museum and regularly hosts events in honour of veterans.

Miller said it was a huge honour to be recognized in this way and to see everyone else who was receiving the same award.

“I’m certainly quite humbled and appreciative of being recognized for the decades of work towards promoting and advocating for veterans and remembrance,” said Miller.

He added, “It was very insightful to see the other diverse amount of work the other recipients have volunteered over the many years and helping to veterans and the services.”

Duffy was a founding member of the Cypress Hills Division of the RCMP Veteran’s Association in 2005. At the time, he said the RCMP was not unionized, so he worked to represent RCMP veterans.

“We just look after those who were injured in the line of duty, and some of the injuries are not visible. We are the conduit, we help those folks get to meet the people they need to help out their individual situations through Veterans Affairs Canada,” said Duffy.

He later transferred ot the Lethbridge Division and worked his way up to the role of secretary, a position he still holds today.
