Expansion of YWCA Lethbridge’s emergency women’s shelter approved

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge has approved funding to allow more women and children to flee domestic violence.

At the regular council meeting on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, members voted to reallocate $202,483.80 of leftover funds previously given to the organization for the initiative.

The YWCA used to operate a permanent supportive housing program out of its facility in downtown Lethbridge, but terminated its contract to provide the service in April 2023.

The YWCA now plans to renovate those units into an additional 26 beds for its Harbour House program, bringing the total number of spaces to 50.

Harbour House is the only women’s emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence in Lethbridge. It is a 24/7 temporary crisis shelter for both single women and mothers with their children who are victims of domestic violence.

The non-profit explains that there has been a significant increase in demand for the service over the last few years.

In just the last 12 months, nearly 700 people had been turned away due to a lack of available space.

The funding would also allow the YWCA to upgrade security and surveillance, acquire appropriate furnishings, and conduct cosmetic improvements. They say no significant redevelopments will be required.

The YWCA said the plan is to open the additional spaces in April 2024.
