LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes took down the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-2 on Tuesday, January 30, 2024.

The Hurricanes came into the game fresh off a 6-1 stomping of the Regina Pats on the previous Friday.

The first period finished scoreless despite some chance for both teams. The Oil Kings outshot Lethbridge 11-9 in the first frame, and killed off two Hurricanes power plays.

In the second period, the scoresheet remained empty until the 17:07 mark, when Kash Andresen knocked in a loose puck on an odd-man rush to score his first WHL goal, putting the Hurricanes up 1-0. Luke Cozens and Kooper Gizowski got the assists on the tally, with the latter grabbing the puck for Andresen to have his souvenir.

The second period ended at the 1-0 score, and the Hurricanes killed off three power plays by the Oil Kings, backstopped by some big saves from Harrison Meneghin.

Going into the third period, the Hurricanes struck early. Following a two minute tripping penalty to Matthew Gallant, Logan Wormald scored his 13th of the season on the powerplay on a cross-ice tap in from Miguel Marques. Brayden Edwards added the second assist on the goal.

11:18 into the third frame, Hayden Pakkala scored his second goal since joining the Hurricanes, assisted by Gizowski to make it 3-0. However, the Oil Kings fought back with goals by Marc Lajoie and Gavin Hodnett just over two minutes apart to make it a one goal game.

Despite the Oil Kings’ pressure, Pakkala put the nail in the coffin with an empty net goal with just over a minute to go in the game.

Andresen was named the game’s first star after scoring his first goal. Meneghin was named second star, stopping 32 shots for his 21st win of the season. Third star went to Lajoie.

The Hurricanes will look to continue their win streak on Wednesday, January 31, when they travel to Swift Current to take on the Broncos.
